AdSense for search is a tool that provides a means of search directly through a publisher's website. The tool provides search results containing AdWords ads, allowing publishers to generate revenue from more than ads.

The effectiveness of this tool for publishers is based on its functionality. Currently, visitors may browse products on a site, but must exit the site to conduct a full Google search. If visitors are offered a way to the search engine directly on the site, they will take advantage of it and the publisher can receive monetary returns.

Publishers often state that a search tool located on their site has the advantage of generating AdSense revenues without diminishing their brand. The possibility of a search leading the visitor to a rival site is not a relevant disadvantage because the visitor is likely to return to their site for the publisher's product or to conduct a new search. The space that an AdSense ad occupies on screen is also taken care of. The results are displayed on a separate page, so publishers are not sacrificing space where AdSense would have previously appeared. The results page and the search function use the technology that is already in the AdSense application. This simplifies things for the publisher because they aren't forced to download and upkeep several different programs and technologies at one time.

The tool also has the potential for visitors to select the given website as their homepage. If the website contains relevant resources and still has the functionality associated with Google then the website appeals to a greater number of visitors. Those who visit a site for the first time may realize that it will not satisfy their needs. However, they may still utilize the website's search function. Often, publishers state that they receive less revenue if a visitor uses the search tool than if they had clicked on one of the ads. This is true, but surfers are more likely to be drawn towards ads when AdSense search is offered on the same site. Also, they may use the search function, but return to the site's ads due to being unable to find the product they want through search.

The selectiveness of advertisers leads to a limited database of AdSense advertisers to show ads for. However, the AdSense for search toolbar allows search results to include those that do not choose to advertise through AdSense. Because the search tool runs from Google, larger market leading websites are opting to offer the search tool on their sites. Unlike the ads, the search tool does not directly lead to competitor's websites. These larger companies also believe that their brand gains strength by being aligned with the Google logo that can be placed with the search tool. Those who maintain that revenues would increase if visitors believed that the search is exclusive to their site have the option to forgo the Google logo.

While AdSense ads are plagued with click fraud, the same situation is less likely to occur when using the search tool offered by AdSense. Click fraud would require the performance of realistic searches. If they weren't realistic, the fraud would be obvious and the site would be shut down. Due to less revenue per click, those committing click fraud would not be making enough income to justify committing the fraud, and would be likely to refrain from offering search on their sites at all.
